eecOloo
A modular composting toilet concept for festivals.
For my bachelor thesis, I designed eecOloo: a modular composting toilet cabin for festivals. The project focused on the full lifecycle of use, from transport and installation to visitor experience, maintenance, dismounting, and compost processing.

Designing for every stakeholder.
Festival toilets involve many different stakeholders. Visitors need comfort and clarity. Organizers need efficient logistics and reliable maintenance. Installers need fast setup and safe handling. Transporters need compact dimensions. Compost processors need separation, storage, and access.
eecOloo was developed as a modular toilet cabin that responds to these different needs. Instead of treating the toilet as a static object, the concept changes configuration throughout its lifecycle: compact during transport, accessible during installation, comfortable during use, open for maintenance, and separated for compost processing.
From transport to compost.
The cabin was designed around the complete festival lifecycle. Each phase created different requirements for form, access, movement, storage, and interaction. The concept moves through transport, installation, use, maintenance, dismounting, and composting.

Logistics. Usability. Processing.
The concept was developed around three connected systems. Logistics focused on transport, installation, safety, and handling. Usability focused on the visitor experience and maintenance interactions. Processing focused on waste separation, monitoring, and composting.

A cabin that opens for maintenance.
The toilet cabin was designed to shift from a compact transport state into an accessible operational state. Pull-up and pull-out movements allow service components to become reachable, while the cabin remains structured and secure during use.

A mechanical sawdust dispenser.
A key usability challenge was the unfamiliarity of compost toilets. To reduce user responsibility, I designed a semi-automatic sawdust dispenser. A push-button interaction deposits a measured amount of sawdust into the toilet, supporting the composting process without relying on the user to understand the system.
